My mother was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2010. This is a blog about coming to terms with her absent mind.

Day Centre Day

Thursdays are so much better than they used to be. She still says she doesn't want to go, but as she only realises she's going when the doorbell rings and her coat goes on there's not a lot of time to work herself up into a snit.

I woke her at 7.30 this morning, no dramas, no tears, no need to dash for the shower. Wonderful.

I've spent the day cleaning and running to the tip - not a silk flower or a Brixton Briefcase left in the building.

When she got home she was all set to start on the tears but I chivvied her out of it and she ate most of the tea she brought home with her (tinned salmon sandwiches *boak*) and has just gone to bed. No dramas.

I feel a bit disoriented!

I'm off to wrap a few Christmas presents and write Ma's Christmas cards.

  1. Someone's got to ask - what's a Brixton Briefcase?

I think in your situation, I'd spend the day asleep, but I guess doing exactly what you want is a good alternative!

  2. Suelle beat me to it and I lived just down the road from Brixton in South Lambeth until I was 13.
Glad you had such a productive and worryfree day. Must be like waiting for the other shoe to drop though.

  3. A Brixton Briefcase is one of those big old radio cassette players that you saw carried on shoulders of youths back in the day.

Sue - for the first 5 or 6 weeks that's pretty much all I did but I can get so much more done in those 6 hours than I can in the rest of the week so I've started using the day more effectively!

And yes Vickie, my heart does start to sink as we get closer to five o'clock, but as I said, it really is getting better. Very very slowly but better :)
